Brand Health Check: 24 Questions Every Owner Should Ask

Quick answer: A brand health check is a short, regular test of how well your brand is doing today. Ask yourself honest questions across six areas: strategy, governance, customer and staff experience, money and market strength, new ideas, and ethics. Below are 24 questions, four for each area, that any owner can answer this week. For a scored version, the free Brand Snapshot of TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard checks your brand against the Six Trust Pillars with 24 questions in about 10 minutes.

You would not wait for a heart attack before seeing a doctor. Yet many owners wait for a crisis, a bad review that goes viral or a big customer who walks away, before they look at the health of their brand. A brand health check is the regular check-up that catches problems early.

This is Day 4 of our daily series on brands, branding and brand accreditation. Yesterday we shared a full step-by-step brand audit checklist. Today is the quicker version: 24 questions you can answer in one sitting to see how healthy your brand is right now.

What is a brand health check?

A brand health check is a quick, honest look at how your brand is performing today. It is lighter than a full brand audit. An audit collects evidence and goes deep. A health check asks the right questions and shows you where to look first.

Think of it as a regular habit, not a one-time project. Run it every quarter and compare your answers over time.

Why every owner should check brand health

  • Small problems are cheaper to fix than big ones.

  • Your team gets a shared picture of what is working and what is not.

  • You build the habit of thinking in evidence, which is what an independent standard asks for.

The 24 brand health check questions

Answer each question with a score from 1 (not at all) to 5 (fully, and we can prove it). Be honest. A low score is not a failure; it is a direction. The questions are grouped by the Six Trust Pillars that TBAC | IBES uses to review brands.

Pillar 1: Brand Strategy and Position

  1. Can I explain what my brand promises in one sentence?

  2. Do I know exactly who my ideal customer is?

  3. Is my offer different from competitors in a way customers care about?

  4. Would my customers describe my brand the same way I do?

Pillar 2: Governance and Brand Care

  1. Is one person or team clearly responsible for the brand?

  2. Do we have written rules for our name, logo, colors and tone of voice?

  3. Does someone check that those rules are followed?

  4. Is our trademark or brand name protected where we trade?

Pillar 3: Customer and Staff Experience

  1. Do customers get the same quality every time, on every channel?

  2. Do we collect feedback and act on it?

  3. Are staff trained on what the brand promises?

  4. Would our staff recommend us as a place to work?

Pillar 4: Money and Market Strength

  1. Is the business healthy enough to keep its promises next year?

  2. Are customers coming back and buying again?

  3. Can we charge a fair price without always discounting?

  4. Do we track numbers that show the brand is growing?

Pillar 5: New Ideas and Change

  1. When did we last improve something because customers asked?

  2. Do we watch how our market and customers are changing?

  3. Do staff feel safe suggesting new ideas?

  4. Can we show examples of recent improvements?

Pillar 6: Ethics, Environment, and Trust

  1. Is our advertising honest and easy to check?

  2. Do we treat suppliers, staff and customers fairly?

  3. Do we have a clear commitment to the community and the planet?

  4. Would we be comfortable if every decision we made were made public?

How to read your answers

Add up the scores for each pillar and divide by four. That gives you an average from 1 to 5 for each area.

  • Look for the lowest pillar first. One weak area can undo the trust built by five strong ones.

  • Check whether you can prove your high scores. If you gave yourself a 5 but cannot show a document, a review or a record, lower it.

  • Choose one action per quarter. Pick the lowest pillar, agree one fix, and run the check again in three months.

This simple method is your own working tool. It is not the official TBAC | IBES scoring, and it does not give your brand any status.

Is there a free brand health check online?

Yes. The Brand Snapshot is described on the TBAC | IBES site as a free brand health check. It has 24 questions across the Six Trust Pillars, takes about 10 minutes, scores each answer from 1 to 5, and is free at every tier. Your result shows a band: Very Strong, Strong, Solid Foundation, Needs Attention or Early Stage.

This is a self-check only. It does not lead to any BrandMark outcome.

From health check to proof

A health check shows how you see your brand. An independent review shows how your brand stands against a published standard.

With TBAC | IBES, a brand starts as a BRAND ALLY in the Brand Alliance. As a Brand Aspirant, it prepares the Brand Mirror: a Brand Story and 24 pieces of evidence, four for each pillar. A reviewer recommends a result, and the BrandMark Council approves a BrandMark at one of three tiers: Verified, Distinguished or Icon. A BrandMark needs an average of 3.0 or more, with no pillar below 2. See the BrandMark Pathway.

TBAC | IBES is a brand excellence standard, published by The BrandLaureate Accreditation Council under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF). It is not an award, and it is separate from academic accreditation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a brand health check?

A brand health check is a short review of how well your brand is performing right now. It asks honest questions about your promise, your rules, your customer and staff experience, your finances, your new ideas and your ethics, so you can see which area needs attention first.

How long does the Brand Snapshot take?

About 10 minutes. It has 24 questions across the Six Trust Pillars, and each answer is scored from 1 to 5.

Is the Brand Snapshot free?

Yes. The Brand Snapshot is free for everyone, at every tier. It is a self-check only and does not lead to any BrandMark outcome.

How often should I check my brand health?

Every three months is a good habit, and always after a big change such as a new product, a new market, a merger or a new leader.

What is the difference between a brand health check and a brand audit?

A health check is quick and based on questions. A brand audit is deeper and based on evidence. Many owners run a health check each quarter and a full audit once a year.
