Brand Certification vs Brand Award: What Is the Difference?

Quick answer: A brand award celebrates what a brand has already achieved, at one moment in time, usually based on reputation and a judged submission. Brand certification or accreditation checks the evidence for a brand now, gives it a score, and is renewed on a schedule. TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard is a brand excellence standard, not an award. The BrandLaureate awards and the TBAC | IBES BrandMark are two separate paths, and a BrandMarked organization is not promised an award.

Many brand owners use the words “award”, “certification” and “accreditation” as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Each one tells customers something different about your brand, and each one asks something different of you.

This is Day 13 of our daily series on brands, branding and brand accreditation. Yesterday we finished the Six Trust Pillars with Pillar 6, Ethics, Environment, and Trust. Today we look at a question we hear often: what is the difference between brand certification and a brand award?

What is a brand award?

A brand award is public recognition of a brand that has already arrived. A jury looks at a brand’s reputation and a judged submission, then celebrates the result, often at a gala. An award tells the world what a brand already became.

The BrandLaureate awards have run for twenty years, honoring brands and leaders in 80 countries. As the TBAC | IBES site puts it, the awards look backward: they are a public celebration of a brand that already arrived.

Awards have real value. They create pride inside a team, attention in the market and a story worth telling. But an award marks one moment. It does not, by itself, check how a brand is doing next year.

What is brand certification?

Brand certification, or brand accreditation, is a check of a brand against a published standard, based on evidence. Instead of asking “what did this brand achieve?”, it asks “can this brand prove it meets the standard right now, and keep meeting it?”

TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard is published by The BrandLaureate Accreditation Council (TBAC), under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF). Every brand is scored on the same Six Trust Pillars, each from 1 to 5 Trust Points. A brand that meets the score receives a BrandMark and a Certificate of Accreditation. Learn what TBAC | IBES is.

The BrandMark looks forward. It is backed by evidence, a score and an independent review behind every seal.

Brand certification vs brand award: the key differences

  • Time. An award celebrates one moment. A BrandMark is valid for 3 years, with an Annual Shine Check in years 1 and 2 and renewal in year 3.

  • Basis. An award rests on reputation and a judged submission. A BrandMark rests on a Brand Story and 24 pieces of evidence, four for each pillar, kept in the Proof Vault.

  • Decision. An award is decided by a jury. For a BrandMark, the platform drafts a score, a reviewer recommends a result, and the BrandMark Council approves it.

  • Threshold. A BrandMark needs an average of 3.0 Trust Points or more, with no pillar below 2. Tiers are Verified, Distinguished and Icon.

  • Checking. Anyone can check a valid BrandMark on the public Registry and through TBAC | IBES verification.

Is a brand award the same as certification?

No. An award recognizes past achievement. Certification under a standard checks current evidence and is renewed on a schedule. TBAC | IBES is clear on this point: it is a brand excellence standard, not an award, and it is also separate from academic or education accreditation.

The two paths are separate, on purpose. A BrandMarked organization is not promised an award, and winning an award does not give a brand a BrandMark.

How do the two paths work together?

Separate does not mean unrelated. The TBAC | IBES site describes it this way: accreditation-worthy brands are often award-worthy brands. The awards tell the world what a brand already became. TBAC | IBES walks with a brand while it becomes a recognizable, award-worthy name.

A clean BrandMark file, a public Registry listing and three years of Shine Checks also build a body of proof that a gala speech cannot replace. Past laureates of The BrandLaureate awards are invited first as BRAND ALLIES, and many will find the BrandMark the natural next proof after the trophy. See how the awards and the BrandMark relate.

Which is more credible?

It depends on the question your customers are asking. If they want to know whether your brand has been recognized by its peers, an award answers that. If they want to know whether your brand can prove its strategy, governance, customer care, financial strength, innovation and ethics today, an evidence-based standard answers that.

Many strong brands want both: the celebration of an award and the ongoing proof of a standard. What matters is to describe each one honestly. Never present an award as a certification, and never present a membership seal as a BrandMark. A BRAND ALLY seal shows membership and progress only.

Frequently asked questions

Is a brand award the same as certification?

No. An award recognizes what a brand has already achieved, based on reputation and a judged submission. Certification under a standard such as TBAC | IBES checks evidence against set criteria, gives a score and is renewed on a schedule.

How is TBAC | IBES different from The BrandLaureate awards?

The BrandLaureate awards celebrate a brand at one moment in time. The TBAC | IBES BrandMark is backed by evidence, a score and an independent review, and is valid for 3 years with Annual Shine Checks. The two paths are separate. TBAC is under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF), and The BrandLaureate awards are a separate program.

Which is more credible, an award or certification?

They prove different things. An award shows recognition at one moment. A BrandMark shows a brand can prove it meets a published standard today and keeps meeting it through regular checks. Many brands value both.

Are past laureates invited to join TBAC | IBES?

Yes. Past laureates of The BrandLaureate awards are invited first as BRAND ALLIES. See current options and fees at tbac.ac/join.
