What Is Brand Accreditation? A Plain Guide for Brand Owners

Quick answer: Brand accreditation is an independent check of a whole brand against a published standard, backed by evidence and a score. TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard, published by The BrandLaureate Accreditation Council under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF), reviews brands across Six Trust Pillars and issues a BrandMark at three tiers: Verified, Distinguished and Icon. It is not an award, and it is separate from academic accreditation.

For twenty years, The BrandLaureate has celebrated brands that have already arrived. Many brand owners then ask me a fair question: how do I PROVE my brand deserves trust, before anyone gives me a trophy? That is what brand accreditation answers.

This is Day 1 of a new daily series on brands, branding and brand accreditation. One plain article a day. We start with the basic question.

Brand accreditation in one sentence

Brand accreditation means an independent body checks your brand against a clear standard, looks at real evidence, gives a score, and confirms the result in public. An award says “you won”. Accreditation says “you met the standard, and here is the proof”.

How TBAC | IBES checks a brand: the Six Trust Pillars

TBAC | IBES reads every brand through Six Trust Pillars:

  1. Brand Strategy and Position

  2. Governance and Brand Care

  3. Customer and Staff Experience

  4. Money and Market Strength

  5. New Ideas and Change

  6. Ethics, Environment, and Trust

Each pillar receives 1 to 5 Trust Points. A brand earns a BrandMark with an average of 3.0 or higher and no pillar below 2.

The three BrandMark tiers

  • Verified BrandMark: 3.00 to 3.99 Trust Points

  • Distinguished BrandMark: 4.00 to 4.49

  • Icon BrandMark: 4.50 to 5.00, the top tier

A BrandMark is valid for three years, with a light Annual Shine Check in years one and two and renewal in year three.

The BrandMark Pathway in three steps

  1. BRAND ALLY: join the Brand Alliance. Approval is automatic once payment is completed and the Code of Conduct is accepted. A BRAND ALLY does not yet hold a BrandMark.

  2. Brand Aspirant: complete the Brand Mirror with a Brand Story and 24 pieces of evidence, four for each pillar, in the Proof Vault.

  3. BrandMark: the platform drafts a score, a reviewer recommends a result, and the BrandMark Council gives final approval. A brand that does not pass can request a Second Look Review within 30 days.

Brand accreditation is not an award, and not academic accreditation

The BrandLaureate awards honor achievement. TBAC | IBES checks a brand with evidence, a score and an independent review behind every seal. It is also separate from academic or education accreditation: it looks at the brand, not at degrees or programs.

Start with a free self-check

Before any review, take the free Brand Snapshot: a brand health check with 24 questions across the Six Trust Pillars, in about 10 minutes. Your result shows a band from Early Stage to Very Strong. This is a self-check only. It does not lead to any BrandMark outcome.

Frequently asked questions

What is brand accreditation?

It is an independent check of a whole brand against a published standard, using evidence and a score. TBAC | IBES issues a BrandMark to brands that meet the required score.

How is brand accreditation different from a brand award?

An award recognizes achievement. TBAC | IBES reviews evidence across Six Trust Pillars, and the BrandMark Council approves the result. TBAC | IBES is a brand excellence standard, not an award.

Who offers brand accreditation through TBAC | IBES?

The BrandLaureate Accreditation Council publishes TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard. It is established under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF).

Is a BRAND ALLY the same as a BrandMark?

No. A BRAND ALLY has joined the Brand Alliance and does not yet hold a BrandMark. The Ally seal must never be presented as a BrandMark.

How can I check a brand’s status?
