How to Build a Brand People Trust
Quick answer: To build a brand people trust, decide clearly what you stand for, run the brand with care, keep your promise to customers and staff, stay financially healthy, keep improving, and act ethically. Then show evidence for each of these. TBAC | IBES – International Brand Excellence Standard checks brands on exactly these Six Trust Pillars. Trust is not claimed. It is proven.
Every week, a business owner asks me how to build a brand. Usually they mean a logo, a color palette, maybe a catchy tagline. Those things matter. But in twenty years around The BrandLaureate, I have learned that the brands people remember are not the ones with the prettiest logos. They are the ones people TRUST.
This is Day 2 of our daily series on brands, branding and brand accreditation. Yesterday we asked what brand accreditation is. Today we ask the question that comes before it: how do you build a brand worth accrediting?
What a brand really is
A brand is the promise people expect from you, and the feeling they have when you keep it. Your logo reminds them of the promise. Your behavior proves it. If the behavior does not match the logo, no amount of design will save you.
So building a brand is not a design project. It is a management project. It touches strategy, leadership, service, finance, innovation and ethics. That is why TBAC | IBES looks at a brand through six lenses, not one.
How to build a brand: six things trusted brands do
The Six Trust Pillars of TBAC | IBES are a useful checklist for any owner, whether or not you ever apply for a BrandMark.
-
Brand Strategy and Position. Know who you serve, what you promise and why you are different. Write it in one sentence your staff can repeat.
-
Governance and Brand Care. Someone must own the brand. Set clear rules for how your name, logo and voice are used, and check them.
-
Customer and Staff Experience. Your customers meet your brand through your people. Treat staff well, train them on the promise, and listen to complaints.
-
Money and Market Strength. A brand that cannot pay its bills cannot keep its promises. Healthy finances are part of trust.
-
New Ideas and Change. Markets move. Trusted brands improve their products and services without losing who they are.
-
Ethics, Environment, and Trust. Be honest in advertising, fair in dealings and responsible toward the community and the planet. One scandal can undo years of work.

What makes a brand trusted?
Trust grows from three simple habits.
Consistency. The same quality, the same tone, the same promise, every time. Customers forgive a small mistake. They do not forgive a pattern of surprises.
Evidence. Anyone can say “we care about quality”. Trusted brands can show it: customer feedback, staff policies, financial records, product improvements, ethical commitments. This is why the TBAC | IBES Brand Mirror asks for 24 pieces of evidence, four for each pillar.
Independent confirmation. We trust what others confirm more than what a brand says about itself. A standard, a public registry and an independent review give customers a reason to believe you.
Common mistakes when building a brand
-
Spending on a new logo before agreeing on what the brand stands for.
-
Promising in advertising what the front line cannot deliver.
-
Leaving the brand to marketing alone, while leaders and staff are not involved.
-
Collecting no evidence, so the brand cannot prove its claims when asked.
-
Chasing awards instead of building the habits that earn lasting trust.
How long does it take to build a brand?
Honestly, years. A reputation is built slowly and can be lost quickly. But you can measure progress much sooner. Many owners start with a simple self-check to see where they stand today, then work on their weakest pillar first.
The free Brand Snapshot is a good first step: a brand health check with 24 questions across the Six Trust Pillars, in about 10 minutes. Your result shows a band from Early Stage to Very Strong. This is a self-check only. It does not lead to any BrandMark outcome.
From building trust to proving it
Once your habits are in place, TBAC | IBES offers a clear path to prove it. A brand first joins the Brand Alliance as a BRAND ALLY. As a Brand Aspirant, it then completes the Brand Mirror with a Brand Story and its evidence. Finally, the BrandMark Council approves a BrandMark at one of three tiers: Verified, Distinguished or Icon.
We already have 12 inaugural Brand Allies who have chosen to start this journey. The public registry currently lists 10 of them, with more being added. A BRAND ALLY does not yet hold a BrandMark; it has committed to the standard and the Code of Conduct.
TBAC | IBES has its full launch at the gala on 22 October 2026. It is a brand excellence standard, published by The BrandLaureate Accreditation Council under The World Brands Foundation (TWBF). It is not an award, and it is separate from academic accreditation.
A simple exercise for this week
Ask three customers and three staff members one question: “In one sentence, what do we promise?” Compare their answers with your own. If they match, you have the start of a trusted brand. If they do not, you have found your first piece of work.
